18-HOLE
CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF COURSE
The front nine is quite different in style from the back. Here,
the architect tried to tame the desert, taking out the waste areas
between holes and putting in poplar trees and some shrubs. The
one hole of note is the 7th hole, a 378-yard par 4, which demands
that the golfer make an approach shot over a large, deep trap that
guards the entire front of the green.
On the back nine,
holes are carved out of the desert, with sagebrush and sand serving
as rough. The greens are bunkered, gently undulating, and
receptive to approach shots. Putts are fast and true. The
shorter holes require an accurate selection of line and club. The
toughest hole being the 559-yard par 5 12th, which swings gently to
the right. With sagebrush on the left and in-course
out-of-bounds on the right, it is a demanding drive on a long
hole. The 17th and 18th holes, a 365-yard par 4 and a 560-yard
par 5, respectively, are great finishing holes. The 17th has a
desert island in the middle of the fairway that can be carried by
long hitters. The 18th will penalize the very long hitter off
the tee by bringing a side-hill waste area into play in the middle of
the fairway.
